The long position when investing in shares simply refers to the buying of a share with the expectation that it will rise in value. This is the opposite to a short positing when investing – whereby an investor expects a share price to fall.

Therefore, investors who buy a share generally have a long position in the share as they have purchased it with the expectation that it will increase in value.
